Pygmy Sperm Whale Stranding
Living at the beach gets exciting at times. Right after breakfast and after finishing the daily News, Carole spotted fire department and police car activity and people in the surf and on the water edge on the beach almost in front of our house. Turns out there was a pygmy sperm whale stranded in the surf near the water edge. A female from the Stranded Mammal Group and the father of the little girl who discovered the animal while beachcombing attempted to keep the blow hole above water to keep it from drowning. Reportedly this is the first time in 30 years that a whale has been stranded on a Galveston beach. While it was not in the park, the site was only 3 miles or so from it.

Sydney B. McClendon Memorial Kayak Tours
We have received the six tandem boats, twelve paddles, twelve life vests and a trailer, so the tours are up and running. People and groups are calling ahead to set up a date for a tour, and they're having fun experiencing usually a first try at paddling. To set up a tour for yourselves or your group, just go over to the left side of the page and click on the Nature Activities button to get the details.
FoGISP Kayak Boathouse Dedicated to the memory of Sydney B. McClendon
Before now and until the building is finished with the installation of a pull down garage type door, the boats are being stored on the trailer at the park maintenance building. They must be towed over by park staff for each tour and towed back after. Once the door is on and we can lock the building, the boats will be stored individually on wall mounted racks inside. The boathouse is located across the park road from the launch site, so the kayakers simply will carry the boats over to Oak Bayou and back again when they return from the tour.
